Last Updated: 29 May 2026
1. Introduction
Welcome to locahl.app ("we," "our," or "us"). These Terms and Conditions ("Terms") govern your access to and use of the Locahl desktop application for Windows, macOS, and Linux, our website at locahl.app, and related online services such as license activation, software updates, and customer support (collectively, the "Service"). By downloading, purchasing, or using the Service, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.
2. Definitions
- "Service" means the Locahl desktop application, the locahl.app website, and related services we provide for licensing, updates, and support.
- "Software" means the Locahl desktop application and any updates we make available.
- "User" or "you" means any individual or organization using the Service.
- "Device" means a computer on which the Software is installed and activated.
- "Solo License" means a one-time license for use on one Device at a time, as described at purchase.
- "Team License" means a volume license for multiple seats or Devices, purchased through our team sales process.
- "License" means a Solo License or Team License granting the right to use the Software under these Terms.
3. License and Usage Rights
3.1 License Grant
Subject to your compliance with these Terms and payment of applicable fees, we grant you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to install and use the Software for your internal business or personal purposes. A Solo License may be activated on one Device at a time. If you sign in on another Device, the previous active session may be ended to enforce this limit. Team Licenses are subject to the seat count and terms agreed at purchase.
3.2 Usage Restrictions
You may not:
- Share, resell, sublicense, rent, or lease a Solo License beyond the permitted number of Devices.
- Circumvent license activation, session, or seat enforcement mechanisms.
- Reverse engineer, decompile, or disassemble the Software except where applicable law expressly permits it.
- Remove or alter proprietary notices in the Software.
- Use the Service for unlawful purposes or to interfere with systems you are not authorized to modify.
- Use the Service in a way that could harm, overload, or impair our infrastructure.
4. Licenses and Payment
4.1 Available Licenses
- Solo License: one-time purchase for one Device at a time, with product updates included for the licensed version line as we make them available.
- Team License: volume licensing for organizations (typically three or more seats), with pricing, billing, and seat allocation agreed separately.
- Prices, features, and plan details shown on locahl.app at the time of purchase apply to your order.
4.2 Payment and Refunds
- Purchases are processed as a one-time payment through Stripe (or another payment provider we designate).
- You receive download instructions and license access by email after successful payment.
- Fees are non-refundable except where required by applicable consumer protection law or where we explicitly agree otherwise in writing.
- We may change prices for future purchases with reasonable notice on our website; changes do not affect licenses already paid for.
5. User Responsibilities
5.1 System Requirements and Permissions
You are responsible for ensuring your Device meets the published system requirements and that you have the administrative rights needed to read and modify your system's hosts file. The Software may require elevated permissions on some operating systems.
5.2 Hosts File and Configuration Data
Locahl helps you edit a sensitive system file. You remain solely responsible for:
- The content you add, enable, disable, import, or apply to your hosts file and any impact on network access, development workflows, or security.
- Reviewing changes before applying them, including entries imported from JSON or bulk text.
- Maintaining your own backups beyond those the Software may create automatically.
- Compliance with laws, workplace policies, and third-party terms when redirecting domains or blocking services.
6. Service Limitations and Modifications
6.1 Availability
- Core editing features work locally on your Device and do not require a continuous internet connection.
- Online components (license activation, session checks, updates, and support) may be unavailable during maintenance or due to factors outside our control.
- We do not guarantee uninterrupted access to online services.
6.2 Changes and Updates
We may:
- Release updates, including security fixes and new features; updates may be delivered automatically when enabled.
- Modify or discontinue features where reasonably necessary for security, compliance, or product direction.
- Require a minimum Software version to continue using online license services.
7. Privacy
7.1 Privacy
Our collection and use of personal data is described in our Privacy Policy at locahl.app/privacy. By using the Service, you acknowledge that policy.
- License and account data (such as email and activation identifiers).
- Limited technical data to operate licensing sessions and optional anonymous diagnostics.
- Website and checkout data when you use locahl.app or purchase a license.
7.2 Security
We implement reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect data we process. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure.
8. Intellectual Property
8.1 Ownership
- The Service, including the Software, branding, documentation, and website content, is owned by us or our licensors and protected by intellectual property laws.
- These Terms do not transfer ownership to you—only the limited license in Section 3.
- You retain ownership of your hosts entries, environment configurations, and other content you create, subject to any third-party rights in imported material.
9. Disclaimer of Warranties
TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE" WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, WHETHER EXPRESS, IMPLIED, OR STATUTORY, INCLUDING IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT THE SERVICE WILL BE ERROR-FREE, THAT HOSTS FILE CHANGES WILL PRODUCE A PARTICULAR RESULT, OR THAT NETWORK OR DNS BEHAVIOR WILL MATCH YOUR EXPECTATIONS.
10. Limitation of Liability
TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, WE SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR FOR LOSS OF PROFITS, DATA, OR GOODWILL, ARISING FROM YOUR USE OF THE SERVICE OR FROM CHANGES TO YOUR HOSTS FILE OR SYSTEM CONFIGURATION. OUR TOTAL LIABILITY FOR ANY CLAIM RELATING TO THE SERVICE SHALL NOT EXCEED THE AMOUNT YOU PAID US FOR THE LICENSE GIVING RISE TO THE CLAIM IN THE TWELVE (12) MONTHS BEFORE THE EVENT. SOME JURISDICTIONS DO NOT ALLOW CERTAIN LIMITATIONS; IN THOSE CASES, OUR LIABILITY IS LIMITED TO THE GREATEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW.
11. Term and Termination
11.1 Term
These Terms apply while you use the Service. A paid license continues for the scope purchased (including updates as described in Section 4) unless terminated under this Section.
11.2 Termination
We may suspend or terminate your license or access to online services if:
- You materially breach these Terms.
- You misuse the Service, including license sharing or circumvention.
- We are required to do so by law or to protect the Service or other users.
- Fraudulent or reversed payment is identified for your purchase.
12. Changes to Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. We will post the revised Terms on locahl.app with an updated "Last Updated" date. Material changes may also be communicated by email or in the Software where appropriate. Continued use after the effective date constitutes acceptance, except where applicable law requires your consent.
